WORKSHOP
on
PHILOSOPHICAL METHODOLOGY:

“WILLIAMSON ON ABDUCTIVE PHILOSOPHY”
7th of October 2017.

Keynote by
TIMOTHY WILLIAMSON (OXFORD)

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

In his paper “Abductive Philosophy” Timothy Williamson argues that philosophy already uses a broadly abductive methodology to some extent, and that it should use this methodology to a greater extent and in a more systematic and more self-aware way. This workshop aims at exploring this picture of philosophical methodology. It invites critical assessment of the merits of this approach, e.g. with respect to (but not restricted to)…

… its general viability as a methodology for philosophy, its revisionary potential and its compatibility with current methodology; …

… epistemic aspects like the apparent reliance of an abductive methodology on simplicity, elegance, and similar factors in ranking theories; …

… the use of abduction in philosophy and in mathematics etc.

We invite submissions from early career philosophers to comment on Williamson’s paper “Abductive Philosophy”. We especially encourage submissions from members of groups that are underrepresented in academic philosophy.

WORKSHOP FORMAT

The workshop is designed to be small in order to foster an in-depth discussion of all the contributions. Therefore a draft version of the papers of all participants is to be distributed a few weeks in advance in order to allow for study and reaction to the points raised by the other participants.

The workshop itself will drastically reduce formal presentation time to increase discussion time. Timothy Williamson will give a keynote address. The commentators’ sessions will be comprised of a very short introduction of the paper (20-25 minutes), which is followed by a lengthy discussion of it (35-40 minutes). A maximum of four papers will be accepted.

SUBMISSION INFORMATION

Extended Deadline for submission of abstracts: 13th of June 2017
Notification of acceptance: Mid of June 2017
The extended abstracts of approximately 500 words should be in English and prepared for blind review. The author’s name, affiliation, email address and the title of the submitted paper must be included in a separate document. It should be clear from your abstract which authors and debates your paper will address. Files can be submitted in PDF or DOCX and should be sent to: paul.tucek(Replace this parenthesis with the @ sign)univie.ac.at and christoph.lernpass(Replace this parenthesis with the @ sign)univie.ac.at">christoph.lernpass(Replace this parenthesis with the @ sign)univie.ac.at, reference “submission for methodology workshop”.

All abstracts will be reviewed by members of the Vienna Forum for Analytic Philosophy and faculty members of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Vienna.

Note the format of the workshop: There will be a maximum of four papers accepted, which are to be distributed a few weeks in advance to the participants of the workshop (so the papers should be sent to us by the 15th of September). Since the papers will be known by the other participants, the papers should be prepared for approximately 20 min presentation.

We aim to be an inclusive conference and will do our best, within our budgetary constraints, to help with childcare if needed and to lower the barrier of participation for philosophers with disabilities.
